Discussion with Rust Gilbert & Michael Lardner

Dir. Jérôme Palteau | 97 min | France | 2012
On March 2009 Continental Tire announced it was closing its plant near Paris. The 1200
workers suddenly facing a jobless future decided to wage a mass fight against management’s
plans. Hundreds of workers democratically organized their actions in regular meetings of their
rank and file assembly. Their militant job actions included demonstrations linking up with
Continental Tire workers in Germany and with workers from plants elsewhere in France.
While the Continental workers did not stop the plant from closing they did delay its closing
by two years and in making the company and the Sarkozy government agree to double the
severance pay and benefits package originally proposed. This is the story of their fight.

Introduced and discussion with Rust Gilbert, labor activist and Michael Lardner, both of whom are instrumental in the continuation of The Revolutions Study Group which has met
for five years and continues to meet on Monday evenings at The Brecht Forum
