In Out of the Mountains, asymmetrical warfare expert David Kilcullen offers a practical and timely perspective on the war in Afghanistan. His book, a combination of scholarly research and firsthand experience, reflects on the challenges and opportunities that four powerful megatrends are creating across the planet. It is about what national governments, cities, communities and businesses can do to prepare for a future in which all aspects of human society-including conflict, crime and violence-are rapidly changing.

Kilcullen (born 1967) is one of the world's leading authorities on counterinsurgency. From 2005 to 2006, he was Chief Strategist in the Office of the Coordinator for Counterterrorism at the U.S. State Department. He is currently is the Founder and CEO of Caerus Associates, a strategy and design consulting firm.
