Reform or Revolution?
Part 3
Conducted by: The Brecht Forum Revolutions Study Group
Crisis in Social Democracy: 1907-1914

Escalation to World War One

Readings and discussion on how the left, right and center of European Social Democracy responded to:

• The growth of militarism in the major European powers

• The growth of colonialism and imperialist competition for colonies

• The rise of struggles of oppressed nations

• The rise of Anarcho-Syndicalism and other currents critical of Social Democracy

We are also reviewing the split of the working class movement at the outbreak of World War I between the supporters of imperialism and the Internationalists who opposed their own national war machines. A central question to address is why the Internationalist Left was caught off guard by these developments. Finally we will examine how the Internationalists could have more effectively fought the opportunists who were taking control of the main organizations of the European working class movement in the years before World War I.
