Lucky Luciano
Introduced by Nancy Holmstrom & Richard Smith
Dir. Francesco Rosi | 105 min | 1973

Lucky Luciano is about the man who started the largest international crime organization in history. Beginning with Luciano’s repatriation from the United States to Italy in 1946 after 10 years in jail for his Mafia-related activities, Rosi, a master of the noir-inflected docu-drama, constructs, in a mise en scène of customary brilliance, a mosaic of flashbacks & flashforwards that suggest the intimate relation between the forces of law & criminality.

Nancy Holmstrom and Richard Smith co-authored "The Necessity of Gangster Capitalism: Primitive Accumulation in Russia and China" (Monthly Review). Richard is completing a book on capitalism and the environment. Nancy is the author of Capitalism For & Against: A Feminist Debate.
