BACKGROUND
THE FACTS: On June 14th, 2012 Shantel Davis, a 23-year-old, unarmed,
African American woman was brutally shot and killed by NYPD Narcotics
Detective Philip Atkins. (No narcotics were found in Shantel’s
possession).
- NYPD has used Shantel’s alleged criminal history to justify Detective
Atkins’ excessive deadly force.
- Atkin’s so-called “punishment”—PAID DESK DUTY.
WHAT THE MEDIA HASN’T TOLD YOU ABOUT SHANTEL DAVIS:
- Shantel was NEVER CONVICTED of a crime.
- Shantel was family oriented; she cared for the elderly, sick and
disabled. She had strength of character, came from a loving family, was
kindhearted, generous and had an enormous heart. That was the kind of
person Shantel was.
- Hours before Shantel was killed, Shantel was taking steps towards
professional development. Shantel was a beautiful woman with great
promise.
DETECTIVE ATKINS: Alias "Bad Boy Atkins” is known for intimidating and
using excessive force.
In his 12 years on the force, he's accumulated his own criminal record:
- Six federal civil rights lawsuits have been filed against Atkins.
- Four of the six cases were settled, costing the City $224,000.00!
- Numerous complaints of misconduct registered with the Civilian Review
Board.
The killing of Shantel Davis shows us once again that the role of the
NYPD is the same in every Black and Latino neighborhood in New York
City—to intimidate, terrorize and kill with impunity.
Help us fight this racist system that offers Black and Latino youth
little more than harassment, incarceration, and, in the case of Shantel
and countless others, brutal violence.
