Victory to Chilean Student Struggle for Free Public Education for All

Date:
Tuesday, September 27, 2011 - 6:00pm
Location:
CUNY Grad Center (365 Fifth Ave. at 34th St), Room 5409

Chilean secondary school and university students have been on strike since May, occupying over a dozen universities and hundreds of high schools. They are fighting for free public education against an almost entirely privatized education system set up under the Pinochet junta. It is the largest struggle since the fall of the military dictatorship in 1989: up to a million people have marched in support of the students’ demands and workers staged a two-day general strike. The government has responded by arresting thousands of youths.
