Urban Collectives: Creating Community within NYC

Join us for an informal presentation and discussion of urban collectives and what makes them unique as we are joined be members of four such collective all currently residing in Brooklyn.

Midwood House is a freestanding home of six women in Lefferts Gardens. The residents are like-minded artists, musicians, writers and activists who value sustainability, cooperative living, and social justice, regularly hosting "house concerts" and other small events in their home.

Marx wrote that "Religion was the opiate of the masses" and reflected an inverted world, away from the material conditions of working people. Marx's words lay claim to an often times, troubling and uncomfortable space in which religious folks separate their beliefs from the work of social justice. Conversly, the domination of the religious right, "mega churches" and prosperity gospel have negated the social justice message that religion has to offer.
