In 1905, sections of the Russian working class and peasantry organized and fought in radical new ways, including building the first revolutionary Workers Councils in Moscow and St. Petersburg. We will study the impact on subsequent socialist strategy and ideology following this first Russian Revolution, along with the simultaneous rise of militarism and imperialism, spreading out from Europe.

This six-week course will explore Victor Serge's history of the crucial year 1917-18, written in 1928-29 after the author's expulsion from the Communist Party as a Left Oppositionist. Comparisons with Trotsky, Rosa Luxemburg, Menshevik and anarchist histories will provide context.
